Oink or Woof?
By Audrey Paulsen

Chapter one
Birth starts the story

Everything was quiet, except for the sound of hard rain pouring outside. Eve was sitting on the light pink, blue and green rug by the fireplace, stroking her brown long braid. Waiting. She didn’t know what, but that’s what she did. Wait. Then her dad slowly opened the door.
“Dad! Dad,” yelled Eve. “Dad why are you so sad?”
“It’s a runt.” He grunted.
“What? No daddy you won’t! Daddy!!!!”
“I hate dong this but you know I got to.” Landon started to lose his temper.
“Daddy you wouldn’t!” Eve began to cry. She hated it when her father had to kill the poor runt.
“You want him?” Landon moved his light brown hair out of his face. His hair wasn’t long, it was about two inches.
“Yes I want him!” Eve didn’t want anything BUT a pig. She loved pigs.
“No way,” As Landon said, ‘no way’ Eve’s eyebrows scrunched up and her mouth opened.
“Daddy!”
“No!” Landon said as he smiled a big grin. He reached in his heavy coat and pulled out a purple cloth with something in it, he tossed it onto the tan couch next to Eve.
“What’s… IT’S MOVING!” She said as she jumped and ran over to her dad.
“It’s a runt.” Her dad chuckled.
“No way!” Eve ran over to the couch and unwrapped the cloth. The pig was a spotted pink pig.
“I’ll name him Spot.”
“Spot’s a dog name silly!” reminded Landon.
“So? I like it.”
“Oh well. It’s your pig.” Landon loved it that his daughter loved it, but the name. The name was stupid. He didn’t say that of course. But the name. He loved the pig. He loved his daughter. He hated the name! Right then he decided to call him something else. But what? Pig? Piggy? Peg?
“Hmmmmm.” He hummed.
“What?” Said eve as she was stroking her new pig.
“Nothing. Nothing. Nothing at all. Nope. Uh uh. Zip. No.”
“Dad.”
“WhatshouldIcallyourpig? Well? Idon’tknow. Should I stop talking?”
“Ya probably.” Eve was looking up at her dad.
“Ok then. I’ll shut up.” Landon was awesome. He was the best. Amazing was written all over his face. Amazing.

Chapter two
One year later…

“Oh, Spot. You’re so cute. Keep oinkin’. That’s right it’s fine.” Said Eve as she fed Spot in the red barn.
“Eve,” Landon said.
“What daddy?” Eve kept on stroking her pig as she fed it. Without looking at her Father.
“I got a surprise for you!” Landon was holding something behind his back as he said this. He held out his hand and here was a three-week-old Norwegian elkhound.
“He’s for the fields.” Landon said stroking the puppy with his tan middle finger.
“You’re so cute little buddy.” Landon was as attached to this dog as Eve and her pig.
“Daddy, he’s just a puppy! He can’t work yet!” Eve was protesting, as she set the pig down and strutted towards the itty-bitty curly tailed fur ball.
“Yes. So he’s in your hands from now on, until He’s five.” Landon was smiling as he handed over the puppy.
“Daddy you’re the best, but I have a pet, Spot! Remember?” Eve was smiling innocently as she pointed to… hey.
Where’s Spot?” Eve was wide eyed franticly looking around. Eve and Landon ran into the red barn. Eve almost stepped on him.
“Oh Spot you silly pig!” Eve was so happy she could kiss the hoarse next to her! At first she thought that Spot was pork roast!
“Good you found your pig now where's my puppy?!” Landon was franticly looking around. The puppy began to wine.
“Daddy, the hey is moving. Hey I think I found your dog dad!” Eve was bending over and picking up a hey-ey pup.
“Looks like we got a run away puppy!” Landon said.

Eve loved to talk to the animals. Seeing that she was seven, it wasn’t strange at all!
“Should I take the puppy Rosy?” (Rosy was the donkey) Eve said.
All the donkey said, was,
“Eeeh uuh!” Eve took that as,
“I don’t know. What do you think?”
“I guess I could take it, but what about Spot over here?” Spot was always happy, unless something really sad happened. Like if someone died or something. That would be the only time she would cry. She stood up and walked over to the small wooden tub with a handle with a rope tied to it. The rope was connected to a poly. She tugged on the rope next to her and scooted up the red barn.
“Hey Hooter.” (Hooter was the owl) Eve sat next to the seven-year-old hand made looking box (That Eve made herself if you haven’t noticed.) with a gray owl in it.
“Whooo!” Hooter hooted. (HA! Try saying that five times fast!) Eve took that as,
“What do you want?” with a major tone.
“Sorry to wake you up, but I need advice. Your good at that.” Eve smiled sweetly.
“Thank you. What do you want?” the owl ''said.''
“My dad got a puppy for me, but I already have a pig! Is that enough for a seven year old like me? It’s already hard enough wit just one pig.” Eve protested as the other animals gathered ‘round the post in her imagination.
“What you need to do, is take the puppy! When you need the help, ask your dad. Simple!” The owl "said."
“Yeah but my dad will be like, ‘ It’s your dog!’ so then what do I do?” Eve was losing hope.
“That’s when you say, ‘ You made me!’ So then he helps you!” The owl hooted.
“Good point. Thanks.” She said as she scooted back down the red barn.

“Hey Dad.” Eve said as she walked into the peach kitchen.
“What sweetie?” Landon said as she made some pancakes with syrup and butter IN them!
“I decided to take the puppy.” Eve said as she traced the counter with her index finger.
“You did eh?” Landon was flipping pancakes as he said this.
“I’ll gladly give him to you.” Landon replied.
“Where is he?” Eve was looking in cupboards and on shelves.
“In that basket over there.” Landon pointed at a corner with a HUGE basket in it and an itty-bitty elkhound in it.
“Why the big basket when the puppy in it is five inches long!”
“He’ll grow up won’t he?” Landon was right. That puppy will grow up to be two feet tall!
“Ok, you promise to take care of him?” Landon said. Eve nodded a cute nod. She ran over and grabbed the puppy. She jogged over to the barn with a pig and a puppy following her.
“She’s adorable.” Landon said.
“Daddy! I told you not to call me that!” Eve turned around and looked annoyed.
“Ok Cutie.”
“Thank you daddy!”

“Come on little puppy! Spot, you too!” Eve was calling. Little puppy and a pig were following a seven-year-old girl. Just imagine that! Anyways…
She jumped into the wooden tub with the rope. She picked up the dog and set it in the tub. She did the same to the pig. Eve tugged on the rope next to her and scotched up the barn. Once Eve got to the top of the barn, she stepped out and turned around to get the pig and the dog. The pig was in the left hand the puppy was in the right. Eve walked over to a hand cut window in the roof. She pushed it opened and stepped out onto the roof. Spot started to squirm and oink.
“Whoa, whoa, stop squirming!” Eve said. She set the pig down then laid the pup down.
“What should I name you little puppy?” Eve asked the young dog. The dog just looked up at her, and barked.
“Hey are you going to get off of there?” Landon shouted from the kitchen window.
“Ok daddy!” Eve yelled back.
“You sure had me worried.” Said Landon. Eve did nothing but smile sweetly.

Chapter three
A Name, Escape, and a mistake

“So… (Chew, chew, chew, chew, swallow) … have you thought of a name for the little puppy?” Landon asked as he nodded his head towards the basket in the corner.
“I don’t know… (Chew, chew, chew, chew, swallow.). Maybe, Cooper?”
“Why not?” Landon said, and picked up his glass full of milk to wash down the pancakes he and Eve were eating.
“I do like Cooper… Daddy, Can we go to the nearest pet store and get a collar for Cooper?” Eve asked sweetly.
“Sure why not? But after we eat. (Chew, chew, chew, chew, swallow.)” Landon said, and drank some more milk.
“ Ok, daddy (Chew, chew, chew, chew, swallow.)” Eve drank her milk and slammed her plastic cup down like she was angry.
“Are you mad sweetie?” Landon asked suspiciously.
“No, I saw someone do it on T.V, and it looked like fun!” She said. Then Ate her last piece of pancake, swallowed it, hoped off the stool, picked up Cooper, called Spot and headed towards the corral.

“Into the stables you two!” Eve said as she leaned over and pointed to them both. And once she finished her command, she turned on her heels and ran over to her favorite hoarse in the stable, the white Stallion. She got to the horse’s stall she thought out loud,
“Oh no! I forgot to ask Daddy!!” Eve turned around so fast her braid turned and whipped the Stallion in the…rear… She ran away so quickly, she didn’t realize what she did. The Stallion stood up on its rear legs, neighed and ruined to wooden gate! It started running, running, never stopped running! Eve heard the galloping and turned around slowly.
“DADDY! THE STALLION’S OUT!!!!!” Eve shouted as loud as possible! Her dad came out with a pair of reigns.
“I got her sweetie!” Landon Yelled as he ran towards the horse. The Stallion was very far away, and because she was Eve’s favorite, Eve started crying because she was so worried. She twisted around and sat down on the wooden stairs leading to her yellowish-whitish house. Crying..

“I got her cutie.” Landon said, ten minuets later. He was bout three yards away, so he didn’t notice Eve was asleep.
“I guess I’ll put her back and, carry you in.” He said to himself as Landon walked closer to the sleeping angel. He turned around and got on the horse, kicked the horse’s belly and trotted off.
“Wake up Cutie! It's lunch time!” Landon said as he shook Eve awake.
“What’s for lunch?” Eve said wearily as she sat up.
“Ham sandwiches. Or turkey. Whichever you want.” Landon said. He grabbed eve’s hand and pulled her to her feet.
“Awe man! I don’t like Turkey and ham!” Eve said, still drowsy.
“Eve, I’m going to the bathroom, so can you feed Cooper and your pig?” Landon called from the bathroom.
“Sure thing daddy.” Eve said, sleep deprived. She got the bucket of slops and poured it into Coopers food bowl! She grabbed the dog food (While Cooper was eating pig food!) and ran out to the barn, and fed Spot DOG FOOD!!! Eve was so sleepy, she for got witch one’s witch! She ran back to her house and sat down on her stool. Eve glanced over at Cooper’s food bowl and noticed… his bowl was empty!
“Cooper must have been really hungry, his food is gone!” Eve pointed out to her dad.
“Yes… like me!” Landon said. He leaned over, grabbed Eve’s arm and play-ate her.
“DADDY!! DADDY!! I’m not food!” Eve said smiling and pushing her dad away.
“K, k.” he said. He sat back up and ate his lunch.

After some ham or turkey sandwiches, Eve ran out to the barn, like always.
“Daddy, I’m going to the…”
“Barn. I know! Go ahead. Shoo!” Landon interrupted. He smiled as he made the shoo-ing sign at eve.
“I’m going daddy! Mmmmpeh!” She said, and blew him a kiss. (Witch is the, Mmmmpeh, thingy…)
“Love you daddy!” Eve shouted as she ran out the door. If you are wondering ware she went, she went to her daily visit to the barn.. As Eve opened the doors very fast, Spot started to… WOOF! The first thing Eve did was scream! (Very loudly too) She ran outside, thirty seconds later, Landon ran right in front of her. (More like, a yard away from each other.)
“Eve sweetie, what is it? What’s wrong?” Landon said very panicky.
“Spot…woof…” Eve was saying very slowly and lowly. “…And he was barking!!” She said very fast and squeaky.
“Come show me the problem.” Landon said, not understanding the talking mouse as Eve turned and ran. Landon walked in and, the first thing he heard was the barking, the first thing he saw was Eve pointing at her pig.
“Oh, my, gosh.” Landon said he ran out the barn and in the house. Yet again…
Landon walked in and, the first thing he heard was oinking, the first thing he saw was Cooper.
“Oh, my, gosh.” He walked to the nearest bathroom and splashed his face, walked back into the kitchen. Same thing all over again. What are they going to do? Eve came rushing in, pale and alert.
“Daddy what are we going to do?” Eve asked, walking fast towards Cooper and began stroking him, witch made him hush up.
“Your mom would know.” Landon said, very quietly. In fact, he whispered.
“Daddy, don’t talk about mommy. It makes me cry.” She said, and sniffed.
“Sweetie, mommy going…away… is what was meant to be. I’m sure she wanted to go on a mission, what I don't get is why she doesn't have a signal, but it’s fine. I’ll just pretend to be her.” Landon said, smiling. He leaned over and wiped away Eve’s tears, lovingly.
“Good job daddy! It worked! But, what about my pets?” Eve asked, getting back to the point.
“Uh… hey sweetie, did you feed them?” Landon asked.
“Yeah, why?” Eve said, scrunching her eyebrows.
“What did you feed them?”
“I fed Cooper… slops and I fed Spot dog food!” Eve said growing from slow, to fast.
“Do you think that that has to do with the miss sounds?”
“Yeah I bet!” Eve said. Landon rushed to the phone and called Animal Help.
“Hello? Animal Help? Yeah I know this sounds weird, but what do you do when a dog is oinking and a pig is barking?” Landon said in a rush. He didn’t say it fast he just said it panting.
“I sure don’t know! I’ll come over and inspect. Bye.” Said the sales man.
“Ok bye.” Landon said and hung up.

A half and hour later the sales man came.
“So… ware’s the piog?” Smirked the sales man. Eve and Landon both tilted there heads right, looking confused.
“Half pig half dog. Piog.” Explained the sales man.
“Oh!” said both Landon and Eve at the same time, straightening their heads.
“So? Where is it?” asked the sales man.
“The… dog… is over here.” Landon moved to the side. Once Cooper saw the sales man he stared oinking.
“That is strange. Mr., tell your daughter to go outside to the barn.” The sales man ordered.
“The…” Landon said. He didn’t want to say what the sales man was going to do. He was going to tranquilize the dog. The bang was going to be loud, but all the way into the barn, it would be a little tap..
“Yep. That’s what.” The sales man said.
“Ok. Eve, go to the barn.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Eve.”
“No!”
“EVE!!” Landon yelled.
“Yes daddy.” Eve said. She walked to the door, opened it, stopped and looked back.
“Go!” Landon shouted. Eve ran away, confused, sad and curious.

The sales man waited fifteen minuets for Eve to get to the barn. He didn’t ask how long it took to get there, but he guessed ten minuets. The sales man was right; it took ten minuets to get to the barn. Fifteen minuets passed and Eve heard a tap. An echo-y tap. Eve has heard gunshots before that sounded like taps.
Did they kill him? She wondered. She ran outside and was charged for the house. Landon looked out the window and saw her running.
“If she’s running here it will take…”
“Five minuets to get here. Quick, hide the dog!” The sales man finished. He ran over to the dog and put it in a kennel he brought and ran downstairs to the basement, and hid the dog behind boxes and a cloth over the kennel. The sales man ran back up stairs and sat down right when Eve walked in the door.
“Where’s Cooper?” Eve demanded.

Chapter four
A tantrum

“Where’s Cooper?” Repeated Eve. No one answered. “Well?”
“In the attic.” Landon lied.
“Ok. Dad, I’m not allowed up there, so you can follow me.” Eve reminded.
“Of course.” They went up the staircase and into the attic. Landon was looking depressed and sad. He didn’t want do this but, Eve stepped in and Landon locked it!
“Daddy! Daddy! Get me out! You’re the worst daddy a seven year old could have! Dad I hate you!” Eve was screaming and Landon was very ashamed.
Take it as grounding. Take it as grounding. Take it as grounding. He thought.
“Now do what we need to do before she breaks her mom’s stuff!!!” The sales man quickly walked over to cooper and got out a needle.
“Just so you know, I’m taking his voice away.” The sales man said, not looking at Landon.
“WHAT?! No! I didn’t pay for you to do this!” Landon was shouting.
“Then I can’t help you.” Jack (The salesman) pulled the needle away from Cooper.
“What? You can’t help?” Landon was speechless.
“I believe that’s what I said.”
“Oh.”
“DADDY GET ME OUT OF HERE!” Eve was screaming. Landon and Jack both heard two feet walking five steps and a heavy box moving.
“She’s going to break all her mother’s stuff!”
Jack picked up the needle, grabbed his bag (Put the needle in his bag) and left as Landon ran up the wooden stairs, unlocked the door and caught the falling box. He set it down, turned around and said,
“Sweetie, you’re grounded.” to a teared face.

Ten minuets passed and it was time for Eve to get out of her room and eat dinner. Landon opened the door upstairs. What he saw was infuriating.
“No, no, no, no, no, no, NO! She made a rope out of sheets?” He was right. Eve did made a rope out of sheets.
“Why did I even put a bed there?” he mumbled as he looked out the window. Sure enough, Eve wasn’t there. The grass below the window was pretty long, so there were footprints. Landon looked behind him.
“Nah.” He climbed out the window and down the rope, followed the tracks leading to the newly mowed front lawn.
“She’s a smart cookie.” He said to himself. He noticed at the corner of his eye the barn door was open.
“Not smart enough.” Landon jogged over to the corral and hoped on one of the fastest horse they have.
“Yaw!” He yelled, and trotted to the back of the barn. He locked the back of the barn.
“Trapped.” He whispered. He completely forgot about the ladder in the ban and the opening in the roof. He galloped to the front and got off, tied the rope to the barn’s handle bares and walked ever-so quietly Eve didn’t notice. Well of course she didn’t notice; she was on the roof (!) and the ladder next to the owl’s box, Landon didn’t notice it. He walked in and quick locked the door! Did I mention Eve heard that? No? Oh well… Eve heard Landon lock it. The lock was unnoticeably loud. Eve looked back and noticed Landon quickly scooting up the barn.
“Oh no!” Eve whispered to herself. She reached behind her and heaved the ladder to the edge of the roof. Landon climbed out of the hole in the roof as Eve ran down the ladder.

“You’re in big trouble missy.” Landon scowled.
“I know.” Eve said sadly.
“I’m going to have to watch you for twenty minuets. Do you know why?”
“I climbed out the window.”
“Yes. So I have to watch every move you make.”
“Yes I know daddy.”
“Good.” Landon sat down on the bed and folded his arms and Eve sat in the hard wooden chair for twenty minuets. Not making a move.

Twenty minuets passed and no sound sounded exeped-growling bellies.
“Have you learned your lesson?” Landon asked
“Yes.”
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
“Good.” Landon stood up and walked down the stairs, with Eve following.
“What’s for dinner?” Eve asked
“Well, what’s your favorite food?”
“Macaroni and Cheese.”
“What’s you’re not favorite food?” Landon asked.
“ Spaghetti. But I’m wondering what is for dinner!”
“Spaghetti.” Landon scowled. He hated spaghetti too. He did it to punish Eve still, once the day was over, the punishment was.
Why did she have to do that? Landon thought.
Dinner was over and Landon was scraping the plates and no one made a sound.

Bedtime came fifteen minuets after dinner and Eve was watching TV and Landon walked over and turned it off.
“Daddy!” Eve Complained.
“We need to discuss Spot and Cooper’s problem before you go to bed now, what are we going to do about it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Wait I forgot, how did this happen?” Landon asked.
“I accidentally switched foods.”
“Then I guess the only way to switch them back is to switch the food back!” Landon yelled very happily.
“Ok can I watch TV now?”
“No bed time.” Landon said with a straight face. Eve Slouched over the floor and over to the stairs and stopped at the top.
“Do I have to?”
“YES!” Landon yelled. All Eve did was sigh and walk to her bed.
Landon heard a faded voice say,
“You sure?”
“Eve!”
Another sigh.

Eve woke up to the smell of sausages and pancakes. She ran down stairs and on her chair (that slid a little to the left.)
“Is it ready?” Eve asked.
“Barely. He set a pile of pancakes in the middle of the table and put a pancake on Eve’s plate.
“Mmmmmmmm!” Eve said and dug in. She didn’t need to ask if it was his special pancakes with the syrup in them. (I believe I mentioned that earlier so let’s call them…
Ooh! Go get a piece of paper and write down what you think they should be called and I’ll but down a blank thing like this: _____!!!)
The syrup dripped and oozed out of her pancake.
“Thank you daddy!” Said Eve as Landon ate his _____.
“Mmmmmmmm! These seem to be the best ones I have made yet!”
“You’re right daddy! Hey, can I play with Hannah today?”
“Only if she can!” Landon took a bite of his pancakes.
“Will you feed cooper?” Landon asked.
“Yes daddy.” Eve replied and fed Cooper dog food.
“I’ll go feed Spot.” Landon said. “Watch TV while I’m gone!”
“Ok!” Eve plopped down on the couch the same time Landon shut the door. Eve turned on the TV and cartoons were on.
“RUN ROAD RUNNER! RUN!” Landon caught Eve yelling and chuckled.
“Ok! Let’s finish breakfast.” Landon said, turning it off.
“But what happened to road runner?”
“He always gets away. Now let’s finish out meal!

The meal was over and Eve left to play with Hannah.
“Bye daddy! Love you!” Eve yelled out the door, and shut half of it. Their door was one of those half and half things.
“Bye sweetheart! Be a good friend!”
“Always daddy!” Eve said as she ran to the dirt road.
“Hey Cooper.” Eve said.
“Ruff!” Cooper yapped.
“Yeah, I’m going to Hannah’s. Why?”
“Ruff! Ruff!”
“Really? Are you telling the truth? HEY! You can bark now!”
“Ruff! Ruff!”
“AWESOME!” Eve said and ran as fast as she could making a huge dust cloud. She got to Hannah’s house and knocked. The door opened and there was a red head with freckles and pale skin. She was in a green and pink sundress.
“Hey Hannah! Can you play? Oh and I heard you had a new lamb!”
“Yeah! Want to see her? She’s my mom’s.” Said Hannah as she ran up the stairs and into the backyard. Eve followed. They played for hours until Landon came and told them it was time for her to come home.
They were walking along the road, and Eve said,
“Hey dad can I get a lamb?”
“No, But I got something for you…”

It lunch time!” Landon said as he shook Eve awake.

I’m sure there’s a reason for her death, but it’s fine.

“So? Ware is it?” asked the sales man.

A tantrum
“Ware’s Cooper?” Repeated Eve.

Landon heard a faded voice say,
“You sure?”
“Eve.” Another sigh.

The End

I just absoulutely LOVE this story, Audrey. You have a talent for writing. I read it the first time last year in September. It really, really, really cheered me up since I was feeling bad at the time. So even though I know your writing will mature/improve/grow as you keep on writing, this story will always be one of my all time favorites. Thanks for writing and sharing this story. You ROCK! I'm so lucky to be your Auntie.
